Want to help Deerfield be an even greener place? Become an environmental proctor!

Environmental Proctors educate and encourage their peers to recognize the impact of their actions on the environment and alter their habits accordingly.

Our environmental proctors have had a significant impact on dorm energy use and recycling in past years. We have improved our Green Cup Challenge results and increased our recycling, resulting in reduced waste to our overburdened landfills. This is a chance to be a student leader in sustainability.

Responsibilities of being an environmental proctor include:

Attending biweekly and sometimes weekly meetings (approx. 45 min). The tentative meeting time is Tuesday after sit-down dinner (approximately 6:45 pm).

Being involved in at least one environmental project a term, like the Green Cup in the winter term (this can take up to another hour per week).

Being a passionate, informed, and active role model.

Ensuring that every student’s Deerfield experience includes learning to think about his or her impact on the environment.

Some things environmental proctors do:

Organize hallway recycling – informing students of what and what isn’t recyclable

Inform students of the environmental and economic benefits of compact fluorescent lights.

Teach peers about “Phantom Loads” and organize holiday “unplugs.”

Encourage students to turn off unnecessary lights and electronic equipment

Educate hallway about how dorm heating system works and report problems.

Plan and execute projects to improve campus sustainability.

If you are interested in becoming an environmental proctor, fill out the online application. Both day and boarding students are encouraged to apply. Applications will be due Thursday, October 13.

The opening of school is always a busy time of year, but this fall, tropical storm Irene and the heavy rains that followed added significant amounts of work for our Physical Plant and Grounds staff. The fact that we were able to welcome our students on the scheduled date speaks volumes about our staff’s competence and “can do” attitude. Our thanks go out to them as they work around the clock to prepare most of our athletic fields for play later this fall.

We’re thankful that the turf fields were cleaned in time for pre-season, and that we have been able to create three fields on the quad behind the Main School Building. We will also play more games away this fall. The situation with the four south fields and the town lot is more challenging. Due to the large amounts of debris left from the storm, they will be unusable this academic year. We plan to reseed those fields so they may be available next fall. The grass on the varsity football, soccer, and softball fields (six in total) has been suffocated, so even if we clear the sludge from the top of the fields, there is nothing that will grow. Our plan is to strip the fields of the grass and sludge and plant new sod, with the hope that they will be ready by late October.

Our Dean of Students and Athletic Director are coordinating groups of students to assist with other minor tasks on campus so that our Physical Plant staff can focus on the athletic fields as an urgent priority.

I look forward to providing quick updates on campus life from time to time. In spite of Irene’s wrath, the school year is off to a great start, and the school feels more alive than ever.

The story of Sojourner Truth–an ex-slave abolitionist who lived in Florence, MA–has been told many times, but never like this.

On July 1 and 2 in the Black Box Theater, Old Deerfield Productions will present a development performance of an original folk opera about the life of Sojourner Truth. Truth features Evelyn Harris–formerly of the internationally acclaimed a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock–as the famous activist, with music by Paula M. Kimper and libretto by Talaya Delaney. According to Linda McInerney, Artistic Director of Old Deerfield Productions, “the opera focuses on the life of this complicated, brilliant woman who, though illiterate, was a relentless champion of those deprived of justice and freedom.”

The performance at Deerfield will feature a development workshop of Act I and excerpts from the rest of the opera. Talkbalks with the creators and performers will follow each performance to gather input from the audience. Shows start at 7:30pm; tickets will be sold at the door for $10 on a first come first serve basis.

The world premiere of Truth will take place at the Academy of Music in Northampton, MA, on February 16, 17, and 18, 2012. For more information about Truth, visit truthopera.com.
