Caroline Trudeau Monninger and her husband Steve are proud to announce the birth of their son, Michael Charles “Mikey” on March 8th, 2012. Big brother JJ was very excited about Mikey’s arrival and he has realized that the older Mikey is getting the more fun he is to play with!

Squash Spanning Deerfield Generations

Played recently in the same draw of the 4.0 division of the Virginia State Squash Open as Bob Hetherington ’59, who has won numerous regional and national squash and tennis titles during his illustrious amateur career. Bob, still spry 72, was upset in the quarterfinals by a young 40-something but I am glad to report that I avenged his loss in the finals, saving a match ball at 9-10 in the fifth game to eke out a narrow win over his conqueror and restore a measure of Deerfield pride. My four-year-old daughter is awfully happy to have a lucite “trophy” on display in her room. Next stop: Atlanta for the Piedmont Driving Club Invitational in mid-March.

’64 Update

Lowell Davis ’64 has transitioned from a teacher/coach/athletic director at the Landon School in Bethesda, MD to working with alumni. Lowell and Nancy Davis are expecting to be grandparents for the first time in March 2013 when their daughter, Laura, is due. Lowell has completed 45 years in education. Nancy has taught elementary education for 42 years.

Since I last wrote, I married Kaelan Young who I met at St. Andrews and moved to sunny Tampa FL. Curtis Chin ’01, Katie Beth ’02, and Matt Konowicz ’01 were all there to celebrate. I now split time between Tampa and Washington, where the consultancy Navanti Group I founded three years ago continues to grow. I recently caught up with Eli Barnes ’99 in DC and got to meet Curtis and KB’s baby boy.

Eli and I welcomed our daughter, Hadley “Haddie” Waterman Barnes on September 9, 2012. She weighed 5 lbs. 3 oz. and measured 19.5 inches long. We all are adjusting well and enjoying this new chapter!

Happily Retired

I retired from a long, varied career in education last June. My last position was as Athletic Director, PE and health teacher, and soccer coach at Grymes Memorial School in Orange, Virginia. After spending the summer in Maine, kayaking the waters of Frenchman’s and Penobscot Bays, I returned to Virginia where I am writing and trying to sell my house. When it sells, I intend to move to Portland, Maine to be close to my son, daughter, and two grandsons. I am enjoying the freedom of retirement and love having the time to do some of the things I’ve always wanted to do.
My days are filled with reading, writing, hiking, cooking, and playing music. I hope to see many of you from the class of 1965 at our 50th Reunion in 2015.

Want everyone to know I retired from the U.S. Air Force after 28 years of global fun! BOSH Global Services graciously offered me an opportunity to continue the fun working small unmanned aircraft challenges. I have a 5 mile commute, don’t have to move, and couldn’t be happier! Best wishes to one and all for a happy, and healthy 2013!

After a stint in the corporate world, my son, Chris Toomer, decided that he wanted to do something different and, as a result, he applied for Officer Candidate School (OCS) in the Marine Corps. Now a 2nd Lieutenant, he is on a 2-year assignment at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
