The Gang of Six ( Joyce and Jerry Rood, Sandy and Tim Day, and Merry and Tom L’Esperance ) celebrated our 8th Annual social occasion and dinner this year in April at the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido. Joyce and Jerry Rood were our hosts for the gathering. Kudos to Jerry for spearheading this lively tradition beginning in the year after our 50th Reunion in 2005.

Ben Lovejoy (DA 2003) is in the NHL and was recently traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Anaheim Ducks. He’s doing very well (3 assists in his first 6 games). Ben & I lived next to each other in Field dorm our sophomore year (2000…which was also Mr. Kapteyn’s first year!) and were teammates in both hockey & lacrosse. I moved to Newport Beach about a month ago from Pasadena for a new job. About 2 weeks after moving to Newport Beach, I got a text message on Feb 6th from Ben: “Got traded to Ducks tonight!” Anyway, to make a long story short, it’s been a pretty amazing coincidence to see an old DA teammate/classmate/buddy play in the NHL, in a city on the opposite side of the country from DA.

A few ‘55ers and their wives got together at Deerfield on the first weekend in November in a tribute to our late classmate, Mark Ewing, yachtsman extraordinaire, whose adventures can best be expressed in his own words, “Life is good.” Mike Grant ’55 writes that the gathering “was organized by Meg and Moose Morton ‘55, and was a sort of memorial remembrance for the late Mark Ewing ‘55. Attendees besides Betsy and myself were ‘55ers Wheldie & Don Jenkins, John (Marty) and Jan Gleason, and, of course, Mimi and Jay Morsman. John Spurdle was supposed to come, but ended up in the N.Y. Hospital with some weird ailment probably attributed to Hurricane Sandy. (Also unable to attend were Bob (Smitty) and Rita Smith due to the ‘Perfect Storm’ of 2012 that devastated their beautiful home at Long Beach, NY. Otherwise, the “Iron 5” were well represented). Mikie Ewing, Mark’s widow, was the GOH and she was delightful. We had dinner in a private room at Chandler’s, the excellent restaurant in S. Deerfield at the Yankee Candle complex, and told stories and generally had a relaxed and fun time. We even finished the night by singing “The Sons of Deerfield” and “The Evensong”…. A bit off key, but with enthusiasm. The next day we had a sumptuous brunch at the Dining Hall, toured the Koch Center, and (some of us) stayed for the Avon football game which Deerfield won.”

Congratulations to Tim Day ’55! He has announced that he will officially retire on January 1, 2013, after founding and serving as CEO of Bar-S Foods for 31 years. Tim “(is) somewhat saddened to step back from my life’s work–which has provided me with an enormous sense of fulfillment, numerous close friendships, great personal satisfaction, significant financial rewards, and priceless memories.” Bar-S Foods, founded in 1981, has become the nation’s largest branded purveyor of hot dogs in the U.S. Let’s replace the mundane red lobsters menu at our 60th Reunion Clambake with Tim’s Classic Corn Dogs.
