- Take route 6 west to route 101 west. Follow 101 for 20 miles, into Connecticut.

• Take a left onto 171.

• In half a mile, at the light, take a left to stay on 171.

• Follow 171 for 1.2 miles and take a left onto East Quasset Rd.

• In half a mile, bear right onto West Quasset Road. The lake will be visible and the boathouse driveway is on the left at the top of the hill.

From Pomfret School for trailers:

(If you accidentally wind up with a trailer at the school, do the following):

• Pomfret school is located on 44/169 as they overlap. Take 44 east/169 north. Go straight through the blinking light 0.8 miles north of the school.

• You are now on 169 north. Continue for three miles to the junction with 171.

• Take a left on 171.

WARNING: If you are driving a trailer, do not attempt a left hand turn onto Quasset Hill Road if traveling north on East Quasset road (you will see that this turn is impossible and will jacknife your trailer and hit your boats). These directions prevent you winding up in this position. So do not rely on a GPS since it might put you on this road. If you still wind up in this position, call 617-953-5431 (Greg Rossolimo); there is a way out…

- The above directions are for trailers too and are the fastest to the boathouse. If your bus accidentally goes to the school, either follow the trailer directions to teh boathouse or do the following in a bus only (not with boats or a trailer):

• Pomfret is on Routes 44 & 169 (they overlap as the same road as they pass the school). Follow Route 44 East/169 North.

• 0.8 miles from the school, at the blinking light, take a left onto Route 97 South.

• In 0.7 miles, turn right onto Quasset Rd.

• In 4 miles, take a hairpin turn left onto West Quasset Rd (do not take this turn with a trailer or with boats!).

Other info for parents:

- Parents must watch races from the boathouse. The race course passes in front of the boathouse and offers a full view of the final 750 meters of the race, including the finish. They must not try to watch from the finish line or the dam at the end of the lake.

By Bob York

Jamie Haddad has been playing hockey nearly her whole life. She learned to skate when she was 2 and played on her first team when she was 3. And she gives her older brother, Joe, a lot of the credit for her early introduction to the game.

“I always tagged along with him and his friends,” said Haddad, whose treks with big brother would often find her following in his footsteps – literally – through the snow banks that lay between their home in Wilbraham, Mass., and the nearest frozen pond. “I’m sure he hated me,” added Haddad, who admitted to doing her best to blend in. The key being: “When you’re a 3-year-old girl and you’re playing hockey with a bunch of 6-year-old boys, you play the way 6-year-old boys play.”

After all, the last thing Haddad wanted to hear from her brother or any of his buddies during those formative years was “you play like a girl!” So, that meant playing rough and tough and giving as good as you got. And if you didn’t, there was just one thing for a 3-year-old girl to remember: There’s no crying in hockey.

There are certain times, however, when it’s OK to shed a few tears of joy. And there may have been some streaming down Haddad’s face earlier this month when she and her Assabet Valley teammates captured the 19-and-under Tier 1 National Championship.

“It’s been a fantastic experience to play both with and against some of the best hockey players in your age bracket throughout the country,” said Haddad. And the Deerfield Academy senior has been putting that experience to good use for the Big Green, as she has led the team in scoring during each of the past four years. It should also afford her a head start on a collegiate career, as Haddad will be taking her uncanny ability to light the lamp to Yale University next year.

“Jamie’s one of the most talented hockey players I’ve ever been associated with,” exclaimed Big Green hockey coach Genevieve Triganne, “and playing at the elite level as she has for Assabet Valley for the past six years has definitely helped her become a very polished player.

“She can handle a puck like very few players are able to,” added Triganne. “Once she gets the puck on her stick, it’s like she glued it on there … she has total command of it until she decides to either shoot or pass. And when she shoots on goal, she’s able to put the puck in the upper corners of the goal with regularity and that’s difficult to do for many players. ”

The Deerfield mentor also praised Haddad for contributions to the team other than those that ended up on the stat sheets.

“In addition to her athleticism, Jamie has proven to be an outstanding leader in this program,” added Triganne. “She wasn’t the rah-rah type … she led by example, and that included an outstanding work ethic.

“During her four years here at Deerfield, she was playing for Assabet Valley as well. And what that meant was that she played two games and skated in four practices for us every week of the season … Monday through Saturday. Then, on Sunday, her one day off a week, her parents would pick her up and drive her to just about anywhere in New England for a practice at noon, then an early afternoon game with Assabet.”

“And no matter where we’d end up, I’d always make it back here to Deerfield on Sunday evening in time for supper and study hall,” quipped Haddad.

“Just qualifying for the Nationals is a big deal,” explained Haddad, who finished her storied career at Deerfield at the 100-point plateau. After tallying a team-high 38 points in just 25 games this winter on 28 goals and 10 assists, she closed out her four-year score sheet right on the century mark thanks to 67 goals and 33 assists. “To make the Nationals, you not only have to be considered the best team in your age bracket, but the best team from your state or region as well.”

Going up against the best of the best “is something really special,” said Haddad. And as far as winning it all is concerned, “it’s just an awesome feeling … it’s something you and your teammates can really be proud of accomplishing.”

And Haddad knows of what she speaks. She has not only become a familiar face at these National showcases, with Assabet having qualified in her age bracket five times in the past six years, but she’s no stranger on the medals podium, either. During those five trips to the tourney, Assabet has never returned to it its home base in Concord, Mass., empty-handed. This marks Haddad’s third National championship, having also won in 2008 and 2009 in the 14-and-under age group. She also earned a silver medal in 2007 in the 12-and-under bracket, and a bronze in 2010 in 16-and-under competition.

This winter’s showcase, which was held in nearby Marlborough, Mass., “and allowed my brother Joe to watch me play in the Nationals for the first time,” according to Haddad, saw Assabet capture the gold medal following a perfect 6-0 tourney record. A three-game round robin affair opened the tourney, followed by the medals round, which Assabet capped off by defeating the Chicago Mission, 3-2, in the finals.

“Not to take anything away from our win in the finals, but our semifinal win in overtime over Shattuck-St. Mary’s meant an awful lot to us, too,” said Haddad of a 2-1 victory. “They were the defending National champions, plus the two hockey programs are huge rivals and whenever we meet, there’s always a lot at stake.”

Assabet bested Little Caesar’s in the quarterfinal round, while it defeated the Washington Pride, 5-2, the Connecticut Polar Bears, 3-0, and Honeybaked, 2-1, in round-robin action.

Although ice hockey is far-and-away Haddad’s first love, she will depart Deerfield later this spring having participated in five varsity sports. She played both ice hockey and field hockey for four years, while her springs were a bit more hit-or-miss, doing crew her freshman year, lacrosse as a sophomore and softball as a junior and senior.

And Haddad has become someone you might want to avoid if she happens to have either a stick or a bat in her hands. In addition to her exploits in ice hockey, she hasn’t been too shabby in field hockey or softball, either. She led Big Green field hockey in scoring last fall with 14 points on nine goals and five assists and finished her career with 64 points on 36 goals and 28 assists. In softball, she lugged a .295 batting average to the plate last spring.

By Bob York

Two familiar words separated this winter’s rendition of Deerfield Academy girls squash from a National championship, a New England crown and an undefeated season: Greenwich Academy.

No surprise there for anyone who knows enough about squash to know we’re not talking about the kind you eat. The Gators of Greenwich seem to have first dibs on any and all championships their age bracket will allow them to play in and even then, they’re often urged to go pick on someone their own size. The trouble is, nobody’s too big for these gals.

Greenwich has seven National Championship and 14 New England Championship pennants dangling from the rafters of its gymnasium. It would have had 15 New England titles to show off, but the Big Green ended that streak at an unlucky 13 last year when Deerfield knocked the Gators off their pedestal.

To their credit, however, they climbed right back up there this winter and forced their nemesis to the North to settle for a second-place finish at this year’s Nationals, as well as at the New England tourney. And, oh yes, the Big Green went 16-2 during the regular season – including the National tourney – and Greenwich was responsible for both blemishes.

“Considering we lost our top two players and three of our top six from last year, I think we had an outstanding season for ourselves,” said Karinne Heise, the Big Green squash coach. “It’s a real testament to the girls and how they stepped up. I knew Greenwich would be tough to beat this year … they had just about everyone returning. But I felt if we played the way we’re capable of playing, we’d be among the better teams and it didn’t surprise me a bit that we finished second at both the Nationals and at the New England tournament.”

With the exception of Greenwich, the regular season was rather lop-sided in the Big Green’s favor, as seven wins came via 7-0 scores, while four others were earned by 6-1 scores In fact, the closest anyone would come to Deerfield, with the exception of Greenwich, was Taft, which dropped a 5-2 decision to the Big Green on opening day.

When Heise mentioned that a key to the season would be her players’ ability to step up, she wasn’t kidding. Losing her top two players from last year – the Dewey twins – left a gaping hole in the lineup. Hallie, who went 28-1 on the season, was not only the Big Green’s top seed, but was also one of the top players in her age bracket in the entire country. Charlotte, meanwhile, won 25 of 29 matches at No.2.

That’s a lot of wins and an awful lot of talent to replace,” acknowledged Heise, “but we did it.

With the help of a stepladder, Emily Jones (13) made the jump from No.3 to the No.1 spot, while Tori Dewey (12), a cousin of the twins, moved up three slots from fifth to second, “and at this level of the game, moving up three seeds is a huge jump,” said Heise.

Samantha Chai (15) made quite a debut on the prep school level, as the freshman came into camp and earned herself the third slot, while Carey Danforth (14) grabbed the fourth spot during her rookie campaign. Addie Fulton (14) was No. 5, as Hunter Sechrest (13) and Lindsey Dewey (14) were No.6 and No.7 respectively. The remainder of the roster included Caroline Kjorlien (13), Abby Ingrassia (13) and Katie Swindell (14).

“In addition to their hard work, I think another real key to our success this season was our depth,” said Heise. “Other teams had strong players through their top three or four seeds, but we were able to hold our own one through seven. Considering we had three new faces in the lineup this season, they were young faces as well … they didn’t belong to postgraduates … and we did very well for ourselves.”

This year’s batting order saw all seven regulars ring up double figures under the win column, as Jones led off with a 12-6 showing while finishing fifth in her No.1 bracket at the New England tourney.

“Emily’s a very strong player … she’s not quite at Hallie’s (Dewey) level yet, but she really worked hard over the summer to move her game up to the No.1 seed level and she’s done an outstanding job.”

“I think the experience I got from playing as the top seed this past season will really help me next year,” said Jones. “It was difficult at times, but I learned a lot from it and I’m hoping it all pays off next season.”

One thing Jones can look forward to is the fact that many of her No.1 opponents will be graduating this spring, including her counterpart at Greenwich.

“They’re graduating four of their players this year,” said Jones, “so we’re hoping we can take advantage of that fact and move up to that No.1 slot again.

The three-step jump Tori Dewey made from fifth to second “is just about unheard of at this level,” said Heise, “but with a lot of hard work over the summer, Tori took her game to a whole new level. Dewey (16-5), the team’s lone senior who will be playing at Dartmouth next year, went up against the best of the best in her bracket at the New Englands, and just missed out on a medal with a fourth-place finish.

“And Tori’s play wasn’t the only part of her game that gave us a boost this season,” said Heise of her captain, who would later be voted the team’s MVP. “She turned out to be an outstanding team leader and was truly dedicated to her teammates.

“I’m really happy about this season … we did much better than many people thought we would,” said Dewey. “This team has really bonded together this season and that closeness we developed made the season a lot of fun … I’m going to miss the camaraderie we’ve been able to create here.”

Chai “was a very pleasant surprise,” according to Heise, as she began the season as No.6 and finished at No. 3, where she captured her New England bracket and topped off a 17-2 season. Danforth went 17-3, before earning a silver medal in the fourth bracket at the New England tournament, while Fulton proved to be another silver-medal winner at the New England meet at No.5, after producing a 14-5 showing.

Sechrest, who logged the best showing of anyone on the team during the regular season with a 17-1 record, finished second at the New Englands and was the lone Big Green player to log in a victory over Greenwich at the National tournament. Lindsey Dewey, meanwhile, won the No.7 bracket at the New England tourney and wound up her season at 17-2. The remainder of the roster saw Kjorlein finish 8-1, Ingrassia go 5-0 and Swindell close out at 4-0.

So much to do, so little time.

How often does that quandary enter your mind? Well, suck it up … how’d you like to be a diver?

Imagine performing a successful dive in less time than it takes to describe it. And believe me, we’re not talking “Cannonball!” here … we’re talking about something with a lot more challenge and a lot less splash. We’re talking something more refined … more sophisticated … something that takes a little more finesse. We’re talking about something Taylor Clough would describe as a back one-and-a half summersault with two and one half twists.

As close as Clough can estimate, he has between 1.5 to 2 seconds, “once my toes leave the diving board,” to complete such a dive, or another tongue–twister he’s been working on: a forward one and a half summersault with three twists.”

Clough has been perfecting these additions to his repertoire this winter and will tuck them into his already bulging bag of tricks for the trek to Exeter on Saturday where he and his Big Green teammates hope to make a splash at the New England Prep School Swimming and Diving Championships.

“This is what the season is all about,” said the Deerfield Academy junior of the New England meet. And, to date, the diving competition has been all about Clough, as the whirling dervish has earned the title of Chairman of the Board during his first two appearances there. Last winter, Clough played a key roll in helping Deerfield earn a third-place finish by hoisting the Big Green’s lone gold medal of the meet. As a freshman, he finished first as well, as the Deerfield boys wound up with a silver medal.

Clough, who earned 468.85 points on 11 dives and finished with a 78-point cushion over the second-place finisher, won’t be the only one walking the plank in a green Speedo on Saturday, however. Kellam Witherington (12) and Wyatt Sharpe (13), who finished ninth and 16th respectively during last year’s boys’ championship, will also be on hand, as will a trio of Deerfield’s diving divas.

Danielle DeNunzio (12) will head up this Big Green contingent, as she is hoping to improve on the fourth-place finish and the 420.70 points she garnered in helping the Deerfield girls post a third-place finish in last year’s team standings. Natalie DeMuro (14) is back after finishing sixth last year, while Marina Vranos (12) wound up eighth.

And this pair of trios appears to be more than ready for Saturday’s competition, as they tuned up for the championships this past weekend at the Westerns and did quite well for themselves. Both Clough and DeNunzio won their respective events, while Witherington finished second and Sharpe came in fourth. DeMuro, meanwhile, was third in the girls competition, as Vranos wound up fourth.”

“I feel very blessed to have the talent, the experience and the depth that our diving teams feature, said Deerfield diving guru Mary Ellen Clark. “We have three boys who finished in the top 16 divers at the New England Championship last year, while we have three girls who placed in the top eight. They’ve all continued to work extremely hard this winter and I feel as though if they perform the way they’re capable of, we should do fine.”

For DeNunzio, who will be doing her diving next year at Yale, she’s hoping to bow out of the prep school scene with an appearance on the medals podium after just missing out last year with a fourth-place finish and a seventh spot as a sophomore.

“I feel good about what I’ve been able to accomplish here at Deerfield,” said DeNunzio, whose resume in the sport is much shorter than most of her teammates and opponents. “I began diving during my freshman year at Darien (Conn.) High School,” explained DeNunzio. ”Up until that point, I’d spent my winters concentrating on gymnastics.”

The twisting, turning and summersaults – and most of all, the landings – required in gymnastics began to take a toll on DeNunzio’s body over the years, however. “I tried to stick with it, but the pain just got to be too much. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, but I began looking for an alternative sport.”

And diving came up the winner, “because I wanted to compete in a sport that would allow me to use my gymnastics background,” said DeNunzio, “somewhere I could take advantage of my ability to flip, twist and summersault.”

In just two years, she’s gone from “learning the entire list of mandatory jumps,” to establishing point records in two different pools. This past season, DeNunzio set a pair of marks at Suffield Academy, where collected 268.75 points for six dives and 422 points for 11 dives. She also established a six-dive record at Exeter with 282.95 points.

“I think what’s helped these kids become so successful is the fact that they learn from each other,” said Clark. “They train together, so, the boys learn from the girls and the girls learn from the boys and they get better that way.”

And you don’t get much better than Clough. As he prepares to drain the tub on his third season of prep school diving, the native of Weston, Mass., is undefeated in regular season meets. And his lone blemish on his record came during his freshman year at the Westerns, when he defaulted on his approach on the board and finished out of the running.

Clough, who hopes to take his diving skills to the Ivies once he’s done at Deerfield, has been diving since he was 9 years old. And although it all started out as casual, his diving career got competitive rather quickly.

“My family had a membership at a local country club,” explained Clough, “so I’d often go over and mess around at the pool. One day… I think I was probably 10 … a coach for the Boston Area Diving Club saw me and asked me if I’d like to try out for the team. I did, and that was the beginning of my diving career”

By the ripe old age of 12,Clough qualified for both the summer and winter Nationals. And did so until he entered Deerfield, when he dropped the winter games, but has continued to qualify for the summer competition every year. In fact, this past summer at the AAU Nationals, he placed second on the 3-meter board and fourth on the one-meter board in the 16-to-18-age bracket.

And in case you were wondering whether three straight New England diving championships is someplace where no one has ever gone before, wonder no longer: it’s not. A guy named Grant Gritzmacher, who dove for Hopkins School from 1993 to 1996 has been there and done that. In fact, he won titles all four years he was there.

“I’ll probably see Grant on Saturday,” said Clough. “He’s the swimming coach at Westminster School. And although the best he can possibly hope to do is tie Gritzmacher for most diving titles in a career with four, there’s another Gritzmacher record out there that he still could shatter.

That would be 584.55 points – the most ever rung up by a swimmer at the New England meet.

“I doubt I could break it this year,” said Clough, “but it’s something I’d certainly like to take a shot at next year. The only opportunity you have at an 11-dive record is at the New England championships … you make only six dives during regular-season meets. And next year, we’re hosting the New Englands at Deerfield. That will be my final prep school meet and breaking that record would sure be a tremendous way to wrap things up.”
