Deerfield swimming and diving has a tradition of excellence. For more than 60 years, Deerfield has ranked among the very best in our division. For 17 consecutive years--from 1974 to 1990--our boys team won the New England Championships, and our girls team has won them for five consecutive years. We have had more than 300 All-American swimmers and divers over the years.
We are exceptionally proud of our swimmers and divers. The Deerfield Natatorium is an eight-lane, 25-yard facility, and we have a separate diving well with two one-meter boards and one three-meter board. Deerfield hosted the New England Preparatory Schools Swimming Championships in 1999 and 2000, and we look forward to hosting more such events at our facility.
Boys swimming is coached by John Burke. Our diving coach is Jason Cook.

John Burke

Since John Burke joined the Deerfield swimming program in 2002, the team has posted successful regular season records and twice finished third in the New England championship meet. Before coming to Deerfield, John served as head coach of the boys swim team at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, OH.
An accomplished swimmer, he earned All-American Honorable Mention as a member of his high school team. Thereafter, John earned his BA from the University of Cincinnati and a master's and doctorate in Classics from the University of Wisconsin— Madison. At Deerfield, he teaches Latin and Greek and coaches boys water polo in the fall. John and his wife live with their two children in Louis Marx Dormitory.
He writes: "The boys swimming program at Deerfield enjoys a unique and storied tradition. In conjunction with the Academy’s mission to nurture the mind, body, and spirit, team members strive to realize and perpetuate the promise of that tradition in all areas of school life."
