Cycling (Coed)

Deerfield Cycling has deep roots and began as a competitive entity in the 1970’s.  After a brief hiatus in the early 2000’s the team was reborn in the spring of 2008 as an interscholastic varsity team.  A member of the New England Prep School Cycling League, the squad competes in a long-standing series of races throughout northern New England.  From individual time trials, circuit races to traditional road races the New England League tests all riders’ abilities and the 2011 season saw 19 teams enter the season series.  The Pioneer Valley provides an incredibly versatile training ground with flat roads stretching North/South with steep hills surrounding campus to the East/West.

While Deerfield fields relatively small squads, the team has proven to be incredibly talented with numerous podium finishes, stage wins and a 2nd place finish for the Class “A” boys squad in 2010 and 2011 and the Individual crown for Rhys Louis '12 in 2011.  Historically, Deerfield Cycling alumni have gone on to successful careers in cycling including a handful of professionals racing in Europe to domestic semi-pros and collegiate cyclists as well.  Most importantly, Deerfield cyclists learn a strong sense of camaraderie and a love for the life-long sport of road cycling.

The squad will enter the 2012 campaign with most of the 2011 squad returning to the road.  The team will be led by last year's boy's "A" individual champion Rhys Louis '12 who will be looking to repeat his 2011 title.  The boy's team will also focus on the "A" team crown and attempt to finish ahead of Andover, a squad that has held DA off for the past three seasons.  On the girl's side, the team will welcome a large number of new cyclists and we'll work hard to climb from the B division to the A.  For more information regarding the cycling team, please contact Coach Calhoun at ecalhoun@deerfield.edu.
