Crew (Boys)

Deerfield's rowers practice and compete on the Connecticut River, ten minutes from campus. In the spring of 2004, construction was completed on our new boathouse, a 5,900 square foot facility that houses 20 rowing shells, two team rooms, rowing ergometers, and video equipment. The team races primarily in four-person shells. The top four crews are considered as the varsity squad, and the fifth and sixth boats are usually reserved for novice rowers who are new to the sport.

In the spring of 2006, our first boat finished in fourth place at the NEIRA regatta in Worcester, MA. Other highlights include the previous spring of 2005 when our first and second crews both finished the season as undefeated New England champions. Additionally, our first boat was invited to compete at the National Youth Invitational, where the crew finished in second place. The 2011 season saw the boys first boat finish second at the NEIRA's and third at the National Youth Invitational. Currently, we have Deerfield alumni rowing in top collegiate programs, including Brown, Cal-Berkeley, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Georgetown, Yale, and the United States Naval Academy. Wayne Berger

A 1984 graduate of Deerfield, Wayne earned his BA in History from Cornell University and his MEd in Educational Technology from Harvard's School of Education. Before returning to Deerfield in 2010 as college advisor, Wayne served as a teacher, administrator, and coach at Hotchkiss, Loomis Chaffee, Groton School, and Harvard University. Wayne's daughter, Anna, is a member of the class of 2016; his son, James, is in eighth grade; and his wife, Suzanne, is a member of the Alumni and Development Office. Wayne is the Head Boys and Girls Crew Coach and Assistant Coach for Boys and Girls Swimming.
