Soccer: Junior Varsity Girls defeated NMH

The girls made the short trip to our good neighbors to the north and played on another lovely day by the Connecticut River. Return matches can be ‘trap’ games when the first one went quite well, and this proved to be true for a time today. Urgency was lacking and this translated into play that was too slow and also at times not too very thoughtful. While we challenged the girls to try some new organization this proved to be yet another factor in our slow and somewhat predictable play. There were long stretches of good passing to open teammates, but they usually ended with a poor decision to simply kick forward or a turnover due to good hustle by NMH. The irrepressible Skittles did have a couple of effective runs and the first half ended 1-0 thanks to her. The second half began with some more desultory work but back in our usual set the momentum slowly built and, on a great feed from Tigger, Melman one-timed home the insurance goal. This opened the flood gates and the girls seemed to find their gear, knocking home four more markers, one each from Skittles, Razzle, Toucan and Glinda. The offense was varied, coming from the end-line, dribble penetration and finally a couple of well-placed outside bombs. Kudos to everyone for a strong finish, and special note to Twinkle for effective second-half marking on NMH’s fast forward (indeed, the whole back line improved its discipline significantly down the stretch). And then came the cupcakes!
