From P.B. Weymouth, III ’83
It is bittersweet to be writing my last letter as President of the Executive Committee, but it’s time to re-sole the shoe! It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to the new President, Sara (diBonaventura) Ofosu- Amaah ’01. She is well qualified for the position, having attended the school along with her two sisters; lettered in, and captained, the women’s water polo and swim teams; completed several degrees in Education; and recently joined as Chief Operating Officer of a Massachusetts-based Charter School platform. And she is really good with Technology…
As the old saying goes “out with the old and in with the new.” That was the story this year for the Executive Committee.
In addition to my stepping down after 13 years on the EC, we were also able to retire the 1973 Constitution of the Alumni
Association and replace it with the 2013 version, which was voted in at the Annual Meeting this past weekend. 40 years of good service . . . And in a matter of weeks, our fearless leader from Alumni Relations will be stepping down after 18 years of unparalleled performance. When you combine those years with the 53 years that her husband used to leave his indelible mark on the Academy, you can see why the Board of Trustees awarded the Morsmans with the Deerfield Medal, our highest honor. More than 70 years of unsurpassed service . . .
Not to be outdone by the Board of Trustees, the Executive Committee created a new award to honor Mimi which was unveiled to the broader community at this year’s Reunions. The text is as follows:
THE MIMI MORSMAN AWARD
PRESENTED EACH YEAR TO THAT INDIVIDUAL (EITHER ALUMNUS OR DEERFIELD STAFF MEMBER) WHO HAS DISTINGUISHED HIM/HERSELF THROUGH EXTRAORDINARY EFFORT AND SERVICE ON BEHALF OF THE ACADEMY’S ALUMNI BODY. IN THE TRADITION OF MIMI MORSMAN, WHO TRANSFORMED THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION THROUGH HER BOUNDLESS ENERGY, CREATIVITY, GOOD HUMOR AND TIRELESS DEVOTION TO ALL THINGS DEERFIELD.
So, in with the new, Sara over to you . . .
From Sara Ofosu Amaah ’01:
In keeping with P.B.’s theme, one of the glorious facets of the Deerfield experience is the blending of the old and new,
cherishing the timeless aspects of our heritage and honoring the innovation and inspiration that are also hallmarks of
being a Deerfield student and alum. When I am on campus, I feel deeply connected to the men and women who walked before me and those that came after. The early morning climb to the rock, the camaraderie before sitting down in unison to a meal, and the formative conversations with inspiring faculty are the experiences that tie generations of Deerfield alums together. At the same time, I am always thrilled to witness the interdisciplinary and innovative curriculum, global view, and deep commitment to lifelong learning that exists on campus today.
As I endeavor to lead this tremendous body of alumni, I look forward to hearing about your Deerfield experience, both as a student and as an alum. I am deeply honored to be part of such engaged, generous, and committed alumni group and look forward to getting to know many of you in the coming years.
P.B. and Mimi, thank you both for above and beyond service to Deerfield and our alumni community; we look forward to
continuing your legacy and trying to fill those shoes.
