International Programs

Round Square

Round Square International Service is “a worldwide association of schools which share a commitment beyond academic excellence, to personal development and responsibility.”

School Year Abroad

School Year Abroad (SYA) offers students the chance to study for a semester (China only) or a full year in Europe. The program offers students immersion in the language, culture, and history of the host country, while continuing the academic work of independent secondary schools. Students live with host families and attend school with their SYA group.

Student Exchanges

Deerfield has taken a leadership role, along with Geelong Grammar School (Australia) and Mara a Pula School (Botswana), in establishing an international consortium of national schools. This group has formed an informal confederation to consider the implications of globalization for secondary school education and to explore partnerships among schools, including but not be limited to, the sharing of ideas, students, and faculty. The fourth annual meeting, Global Connections IV, was held at Deerfield in June 2000. Deerfield endorses and participates in exchange programs located in Europe, Africa, Asia, New Zealand, and Australia.

American-South African Exchange

Students have an opportunity to spend up to six months, from January through June, at an independent school in South Africa. A South African student, in turn, will spend the same months as a Deerfield student. Two Deerfield students recently traded “places” with three South African students from schools in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.

German-American Exchange

Students who have completed two years of German are eligible to spend their junior or senior year in Germany through an exchange sponsored by Christliches Jugenddorfwerk Deutschlands (CJD). The CJD is Germany’s largest non-profit, private educational and vocational organization. This exchange gives students a year of intensive study in the German language and immerses them in the German culture. Students live with host families and attend the school of the German student who exchanges with them. There is an opportunity for students who wish to spend just one term in Germany to exchange with a student from Schloss Salem, a well-known German secondary school located on Lake Constance.

Bad Homburg School Exchange

Over the years a gymnasium (German secondary school) in Bad Homburg has developed a special relationship with Deerfield, bringing its chorus and orchestra here in the spring every other year. In alternate years, Deerfield’s German program organizes a study tour to Bad Homburg that includes a homestay and time at the gymnasium. Qualified Deerfield students may participate in this exchange for a term or an entire year.

Toin International Exchange Program

Students interested in studying the Japanese language and culture have the opportunity to do so during the summer months. They attend Toin High School in Yokohama, Japan, while living with a host family. In the spring term, a Japanese student from Toin High School lives and studies at Deerfield.

Maru a Pula Exchange Program

One of Deerfield’s newest academic associations is with Maru a Pula, a private secondary school in Garborone, Botswana. Opportunities now exist for exchanges in this southern African country during the school year or the summer. In addition, students and faculty members may participate in exchanges. One-year opportunities are also available for Deerfield students following graduation.

Geelong Exchange Program

Deerfield is associated with Geelong Grammar School, a leading independent school in Victoria, Australia. The opportunity of an exchange between the schools is available during spring term or possibly at other times. There are also teaching assistant possibilities for Deerfield alumni at Geelong’s Timbertop campus in the Australian Alps.

New Zealand-American Exchange

Deerfield has just initiated a new exchange with the Wanganui Collegiate School in Wanganui on the north island of New Zealand. Two students from Wanganui spent a term at Deerfield, while a Deerfield student attended Wanganui for a term.
