Look Beyond the Hills

Some students choose to broaden their education by spending time away from Deerfield. The Academy has joined in partnership with several high caliber schools outside the United States to sponsor exchanges that allow students from Deerfield to immerse themselves in another culture for a year or a semester. During the summer Deerfield faculty often organize language and study trips abroad to give students a chance to practice what they learned in the classroom.

The Academy is also involved in an array of off campus programs within the United States. These programs are rigorously academic but also include the chance for non-traditional study in a wider “classroom.” The Maine Coast Semester, for example, allows students to study the marine ecosystems of Maine first hand and to apply that experience to classroom learning.
