The Writing Program at Deerfield

During freshman year, students are required to read a three to five minute piece of literature to their fellow students in English classes. Sophomores are required to memorize a piece of literature, and juniors must write, memorize, and present their declamations. Building on this tradition of public speaking, seniors are also required to write meditations. These are longer, self-reflective pieces of writing and seniors present them towards the end of their Deerfield experience—some of which are included to your left. Declamations and meditations are a long-standing tradition at Deerfield, and many alumni vividly remember their experiences on stage.

While writing and public speaking abound at Deerfield, the English Department plays a special role in this tradition.

Writing and speaking receive special emphasis at Deerfield because they are indicators of clarity of thought and willingness to engage in discussion, and they foster a sense of community. Each day at Deerfield is filled with countless opportunities for students to express themselves: our small classes encourage participation, and announcements at School Meetings and sit-down meals ensure that any member of our community can afford themselves the opportunity—and the responsibility—to address the school as a whole.

The voices of Deerfield echo back through generations. These words convey the confidence that comes from a strong belief in one’s own abilities and the power of one’s own voice, and we invite you to hear these voices.
