Every Deerfield student is required to be involved in a co-curricular activity each term. Normally, freshmen and sophomores are required to participate in interscholastic sports for two seasons each year. Students identified as having strong interest and talent in the performing arts (dance, music, theater) may petition the co-curricular Committee for an exemption to this requirement. Advisors will review their advisees’ schedules to ensure that every student has a co-curricular commitment each term.
Deerfield believes that co-curricular activities are an integral part of a secondary school education. Experiences on the playing field, in the dance studio, or on the stage promote discipline and self-awareness, facilitate new friendships, and enrich the lives of those who participate. In some cases, interests in publication design, advanced science research, or studio art can be pursued during co-curricular time.
