As someone who was born, grew up, and still wishes he lived in the Greenfield/Deerfield area, some information about the part of West Deerfield where Clarkdale is located, — the “Old World.”
I bicycled there a lot as a kid with boyhood buddies (no helmets then, and no one ever told me to be afraid of “strangers” even the hobos who came to our house for a meal because of a mark on it that identified my mother as a kind and giving person) and was told back then that the “old World” was so called because it was so reminiscent to Deerfield’s original settlers of the area of England from whence they came. If true — interesting how a story can be passed down over the generations and even centuries. As I pass the “old age” mark of 39, I somehow have a feeling I’ve never felt before to pass such stories along.
You might check what I was told as a boy and believed all my life with someone there who knows Deerfield ‘s history better than I do and, if proven to be untrue … please do not tell me!
