Day 1 at the Round Square Conference!

October 8, 2013

Today the Deerfield delegation had our first day at the 2013 International Round Square Conference. We arrived in Florida late last night and had our first night with our host families who were all extremely welcoming and drove us to the St. Andrew’s School this morning. After arriving on campus and then taking a bus to the Office Depot headquarters, all delegates from Deerfield were reunited with Mr. Kelly, Mr. Miller, and Ms. Lyman. The opening remarks of the opening ceremonies were really exciting with a number of mentionable speakers including the Duke of York Prince Andrew, and the president of the Round Square Board His Majesty King Constantine of Greece. After refreshments where we were able to start meeting students from tons of other countries, we listened to the first key note speaker. Adam Braun is the CEO and Founder of the non-profit organization Pencils of Promise that builds schools and helps to give education to kids in developing countries. His story was a very inspiring one and the topic of the Baraza group that each Deerfield Delegate was then a part of. The Baraza groups we had after lunch were discussion based activities about Adam Braun’s story and how we could potential do something as inspiring as he did. The Baraza groups were each a mix of about 13 students from all over the world. One boy in my Baraza group is from Kenya and attends the Starehe School for Boys, the same school that Deerfield has a strong connection with. Just last year Deerfield was lucky enough to have David Mwakima ’13 come to our school and broaden our global perspective. The Baraza groups we have each been assigned will meet repeatedly throughout the next week. After dinner, we went to three workshops that taught us more about entrepreneurship in a number of different ways including finances, social media use, and public speeches. Throughout all of these workshops we were surrounded by kids from other countries and constantly learning about other cultures and sharing ideas. Finally after a long day filled with interesting conversations and fun activities we returned home to our host families ready for a great night of sleep!
