In face of the inexplicable tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, I encouraged the students last night at our holiday dinner not to give in to the feeling of powerlessness, but rather to redouble their efforts to be kind. In small yet constant ways, we should always show our awareness of and concern for others. At Deerfield, where we value excellence, it is easy to forget that while moving forward, we must take the time to look sideways and determine how to support and nurture those around us. As the holidays approach, I wish you a peaceful celebration of family and friendship.
