Dr. Kerry Emanuel ’73 Honored with 2012 Heritage Award

Deerfield was proud to honor Dr. Kerry Emanuel ’73 with the 2012 Heritage Award at school meeting this week. Dr. Emanuel, a professor of atmospheric science at MIT and leading expert on hurricanes, gained recent recognition for his work in the areas of global climate change and tropical cyclone activity. In 2006, he was named [...]

Read more about Global Warming and the Environment

Inspired by a recent School Meeting presentation by our 2012 Heritage Award Winner, Kerry A. Emanuel, our DA community will most certainly want to learn more about the threats upon our environment — specifically global warming – and recommendations on our responsibilities as global citizens. The staff of the Boyden Library invite you to explore [...]

New Baby Girl

Zoë Lillian Bloomer was recently born in Scottsdale, AZ on March 4th, 2012. She was welcomed home by Mom, Dad and a jealous big brother Thomas. Thomas Bloomer Jr. Class of 1998

Michael Schenk ’96

It has been years since I have spoken to anyone from DA so I thought I would touch base. This has been an exciting few years for me musically as I have been touring non-stop with a band called The Magic Wands on Warner Brothers Records and also just wrote a song that will be [...]

’79 Update

Two of my three sons are at Deerfield. Robert ’13 runs Varsity Cross Country, and Michael ’15 is a full time actor (yes, you don’t have to do a sport at DA anymore). Robert’s success at the sport has goaded me back into running. If you see an old, balding, mildly overweight man breathing like [...]

Taking on the Beast

Me and a few of my boys recently conquered the Spartan Race Beast at Killington Ski Resort. This over 14 mile race with over 16 thousand feet of elevation was the toughest race we have done for “Team Icon” to date.  John Cuellar Class of 1979

Teaching in San Francisco

Pleased to report my x-country team at the Katherine Delmar Burke School finished in first place last year. Tomorrow we go up against rivals at Hamlin and Marin Country Day School. Still proud to be a guest teacher at Town School for Boys. Town Boys Rock. Burke’s Girls Rule.–Stephen Hurley ’79

All Good

Life’s good here in Southern Cali, though the recent move of our water polo playing eldest, Jonah, to George Washington U., in D.C., has made for more than the usual traveling back and forth. Have recently heard from Messrs. Fauver, Demaranville, and Edwards (’78). Hope to see them soon! And anyone else, for that matter… [...]

Barry Campbell

Barry Campbell ’60 died in his home in Lyons, CO on September 10, 2012, after a long illness. In his last years he continued his house design work, some construction and some travel. Every June until the last one, Barry and I made a canoe trip down a western river. He would plan a year [...]

It’s Starting to Get Cold . . . Think About the Summer!

Believe it or not, now is the time to start thinking about what science-related summer programs you would like to participate in. Last year Deerfield Academy had students learning and working as part of a variety of programs and laboratories. Some examples include: researching in a molecular biology lab exploring possible new therapies for cancer; [...]
