Deerfield Academy’s Spring production, The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney is a mosaic of 18 vignettes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. From the story of an unfaithful wife caught red-handed by her son, to one of a woman’s faded memory at her family’s Thanksgiving dinner, it is a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor, and abundant humanity.
