As a new year begins, I am reminded of novelist Henry James’ advice to his nephew William James, regarding the essential elements of a good life, or in Deerfield parlance, a “worthy” life: “Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind.” How will this sage advice inform our actions and dispositions in 2012 and strengthen our Deerfield spirit? My best wishes for a year filled with wonder, learning, and friendship.
