Mr. Trelease Exhibits New Work at Amherst Art Gallery

OF MOTHS AND FLAMES is an exhibit of paintings, video, and performance art by Visual Art Faculty member, Tim Trelease, and local artist, Tom Morton, that will transform Gallery A3 into a multi-media installation/performance space. The gallery is located at 28 Amity Street, Amherst, Massachusetts in the Amherst Cinema building.  All events are free and open to the public. As we near the 100-year anniversary of the anti-war movement known as Dadaism, the world is turned upside down again, in a state of conflict and chaos.  Trelease and Morton attempt to illuminate a new path, with a light filtered through an avant-garde lens. Like the Dadaists, Morton and Trelease hold a mirror to the harsh realities of the world, while employing an absurd alchemy to re-imagine a new way of being. Using video projection and monitors, Trelease and Morton will provide those in attendance with an opportunity to walk on fire and contemplate the human condition. Morton will create a dark cave-like environment with painted phosphorescent moths and a fiery floor of video projection, while Trelease will showcase a newly cut video of his performance piece, “The Specimen Speaks,” a surrealistic meditation on the complex relationship between parent and child, doctor and patient. Trelease will re-enact part of “The Specimen Speaks” in a performance at Gallery A3 on April 21 at 7:30 PM. Trelease will also show new paintings and props from the performance, which will be displayed as artifacts. The artists cite as inspiration Hart Crane’s legend, “For the moth bends no more than the still imploring flame.” Gallery A3’s hours are Wednesday – Sunday, 1‑7:00 pm.
